Pastor Sunday Adelaja: BAD COMPANY CORRUPTS GOOD CHARACTER

Today we have to make a fresh evaluation of our friends and partners. Only courageous and brave people are able to approach completion following God. If you want to succeed you need to analyze the influence of your business (whether your business, ministry or politics), your friendship with people around you, business companions, relations with your staff. How do you get on with these people? Are they helping you to achieve your goal or on the contrary, slowing down your progress?

Your reputation depends greatly on your ties, and I think you agree that we have to pay dearly for a “good name”. You reputation must characterize you as a serious, disciplined, responsible, honest person. One folk proverb says: “A man is known by the company he keeps”. That is why it is so important to reappraise your friends and your partnership.

Do you know why I recommend you do it? You relations with people move you forward or draw you back. Relationships cannot be neutral, though many people think: ”This person is just my friend”. They say so because they have never analyzed their friendship. Actually any friendship that you have at the moment means something to you. If it does not give you anything it takes something away from you. You either receive something from friendship with someone or give something.

Of course, it is worthwhile to sow good seed in people, but do not forget to analyze what soil you are sowing in. If you just “cast pearls”, it is worth breaking such a friendship off as it is not a secret anymore that some friends are mere consumers; they consume your time, energy, finances, and even health. Be uncompromising in the issues of friendship and do not waste your precious time on pointless relationships. You must be prudent in the finest sense of the word; otherwise it will be difficult for you to achieve success and prosperity.

Often we hear that it is uncomfortable for a person to refuse because he is believer. This kind of attitude always surprises me and worries a bit. Undoubtedly, we should be attentive and compassionate to all people, but if a person does not fulfill the will of God and, moreover, he hinders you from fulfilling your calling, stop acting against your conscience and playing a hypocrite. You have a definite opinion inside of you; do not be ashamed to express it directly.

Do not forget that you have a goal which you have to accomplish. Everything that prevents you from achieving it must be taken away from your life.

If you are keen to succeed and fulfill your calling, leave behind everything that holds you back from moving forward. Do not fear to check your Christian relationships; if they bring you closer to Jesus Christ, develop them; but if the way of life of so-called brothers and sisters does not differ from the secular one, move away, because in the end, they will destroy your faith.

Such relationships remind one of a well-disguised and delay-action bomb, sooner or later the bomb will explode, and its consequences can be tragic. God is our perfect Partner, and He teaches us to have true partnership in every business: Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character."(1Corinthians 15:33) “Bad company” is able to corrupt even a talented person.

As Christians we have to assign primary importance of our relationships to everything that draws us closer to Jesus Christ. If your companions do not satisfy God’s standards, look for other partners, otherwise you are in danger of losing God.

You may consider yourself a strong person, able to vanquish temptation, but the truth is that “bad company corrupts good character”. That is why you should not kid yourself. If you really wish to achieve your goal, listen to God! He will never lead you up a blind alley. Do not be afraid to change your friends or companions; God has plenty of alternatives. Do not trust yourself, trust God, and you will see God’s result in your life.

God Himself tells us:”Do not be misled”. Many people are entrapped lying to themselves. God says that in such cases they live in a world of fantasy. These people keep wrong partnership, bear with friends who are intolerable for them, it hinders them form realizing their potential, but they do not undertake anything in order to change the status quo. From an outsider’s viewpoint it just looks ridiculous. It is not wise to waste everything that has been given to us for us to achieve our goals. It is not reasonable to bear something you do not benefit from. It is not judiciously to lose instead of getting. It is unwise to fall down instead of moving toward a great future.

There is a time for everything… The third millennium requires from us a new approach toward ourselves, our businesses, and partners. We do not have much time; we are not allowed to have any excuse for procrastination. We cannot be relaxed as we can lose salvation due to our thoughtlessness.

It is about time we make fresh evaluation of ourselves, our lives, businesses, friends, and companions. Let’s multiply everything that serves the Kingdom of God. We should eradicate from our life everything that hampers the spreading of the Kingdom of God.

Be uncompromising, and God will honour your choice opening the doors to new opportunities and ideas in this new millennium. God calls every person to assess soberly the situation: Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God (1Corinthians15:34). Friendship with the people who avert us from God’s will make your life disgraceful. It is much better for you to lose this friendship now than lose everything later on. You must take concrete decisions for God not to be ashamed of you. The best way to appraise any relationship is to measure to what extent it helps you to fulfill your goal and calling for which God empowered you. Does it help you in accomplishing your goal? Does it bring you to your cherished dream? Do not be afraid to estimate your relationships with people around you. The result will exceed all your expectations even if it causes pain.

Sometimes due to our thoughtlessness we try to please people playing along with their opinion. Consequently, we lose our dignity as dignity of God’s children trying not to appear contrary before people. In such moments we completely forget how we look before God…

It happens often that in our movement we happen far more than our friends who continue to crawl along like tortoise. Do not go back to them! It is much better for them to overtake you! This is my vital principle. I never take a step backwards. If I see somebody next to me or ahead I can stop to greet this person and to talk to him. But if somebody behind tries to stop me I suggest this person should catch up with me first, and then talk.

Turning back is not God’s or my mentality. God is a progressive and active God, He is always moving forward. We have to take into account the fact that in the third millennium the further mankind moves on the more dynamic it gets. That is why we cannot afford for ourselves to slow down, and therefore we ought to analyze the factors that impede it.

Be richly blessed.
